Day #11 – High Ho, High Ho, Off to Haga We Go!

Today we woke up early after having quite a late night but we could not waste a day sleeping in this beautiful country! We went to breakfast at the hostel and then headed over to Haga to do some shopping. Haga is a little section of cafe’s and shops down about a 2 mile long street. Haga has slowly been becoming a more touristy section of Gothenburg and has been adding more and more fun shops. Once we were done doing some shopping we headed to Nordstan area, which is where the largest mall in Europe is at and this picture was taken near there.
Once we were done walking around Nordstan we went back towards our hostel and stopped at this adorable café that is almost right next to our hostel (and I am mad that we have not gone to it everyday and that we are leaving soon!). This was a very small café but was a close, family business and had some very good vibes! I did not even look at the menu because the group I went with was getting stuff but I was not. Well, little did I know that about half of their menu is vegan; I am one happy camper (you know I will be making many appearances there before we leave on Wednesday).
Other than the huge amount of vegan options at this café, they also had this hunk! This is Bentley and he is an French Bulldog! One thing we did find out about while we were here today is that there are certain sections of Gothenburg that are not big fans of dogs. There are people that throw packets of glass and rat poison into the street in the hopes that the dogs will consume it. Sadly, we found this out today because Bentley had this happen to him 2 week ago. He ended up throwing-up blood and his parents took him to the vet and found out that the way to best get the glass pieces out of his belly is to feed him white asparagus. Since asparagus is so stringy and flimsy it ends up wrapping around the glass pieces and creating almost a barrier so that the glass will not cut him internally as it exits. On the bright side though, Bentley is doing much better now!
After we went to the café we went to this amazing grocery store right by our hostel called Happy Vegan! This was the cutest and most beautiful grocery store I have ever been in, it was just vegan goodness everywhere!
Here are the items I bought at the Happy Vegan! I got this delicious cake that I already demolished tonight and it consisted of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and a hard chocolate drizzle with chunks of hazelnuts on top. I also got vegan parmesan and vegan cream cheese because tonight we made dinner, so we made a vegan spinach and artichoke dip as a starter. I also found a vegan mac and cheese and decided to get it because vegan mac and cheese is, I think, the hardest thing to accomplish, so why not try it out! I also found some gelatin-free gummies to try out and some vegan thin mints even though Girl Scout thin mints are already vegan, but chocolate and mint together are my favorite!

Daily Reflections:

– Gothenburg schools do not have apparel stores like they do in the U.S.

– McDonald’s for some reason is better in Sweden than in the U.S.

– Swedes love black licorice
