Vegan Food

Day #2 – Dinner

Pasta Vegetale from Pasta Haus was the perfect first meal. It was so fresh and tasty; pasta in Sweden is far better than pasta in America!

Day #3 – Breakfast

Day #3 – Snack

Day #3 – Dinner

Sweden truly does love their vegans! The hostel had vegan meat, vegan cheese, and vegan butter; can’t get better than that!
I am loving that everywhere we go, they have a vegan menu! Here is Café Husaren’s cinnamon roll that just so happened to be vegan and I got it along with a vanilla soy latte; how tasty!
This vegan burger is from a little pub called O’Leary’s that also had bowling, shuffle board, and air hockey.

Day #4 – Dinner

Tonight we went out as a group and went to Karlson’s Garage & Bar. They surprisingly did not have a vegan option on the menu so the chef was kind enough to make us a special meal. This meal consisted of roasted beets and potatoes, baked leeks and kale (making almost kale chips), spinach with tomatoes, and to top it all off, an herbed mayonnaise was also prepared. This meal was so fresh and much needed; it is not often that a fresh vegan meal can be found in the states because very often it is a greasy, “junk food vegan” meal. As an appetizer I got sweet potato fries that had a side of a garlic aioli that sadly was not vegan, so instead I dipped them in the herbed mayonnaise I got with my meal. Also, I was not a very good picture taker today when it came to my food!

Day #5 – Breakfast

Day #5 – Lunch

Day #5 – Dinner

This morning for breakfast I toasted some sourdough and put vegan butter, a slice of vegan salami, vegan cheese, cucumbers, and yellow peppers on it with a side of earl grey tea.
For lunch we went to Gothenburg University and they had a section where you could take what you wanted so I got cabbage, raw broccoli, and a sautéed broccoli. For the main course they had a vegan chili with white rice, which was absolutely delicious!
Tonight we had an open dinner and went to Julia’s Café and I got the vegan option which was so good! It was penne pasta with a vegan alfredo sauce made with oat milk and also had sautéed veggies in it.

Day #6 – Lunch

Day #6 – Dinner

Today Qualisys provided lunch and the vegan option was white rice with sautéed peppers, carrots, and cauliflower in a curry sauce with lentils.
Today we had an open dinner and went out in some groups. My group went to I Love Pizza and I (of course) got the vegan option! On this pizza there was regular red sauce, tomatoes, grilled eggplant, arugula, and vegan cheese, and it was so good!

Day #7 – Breakfast

This morning for breakfast I had sourdough toast that is brought in fresh everyday to the hostel from a bakery along with vegan butter and vegan cheese. I also had a side of banana chips and oranges, and another piece of toast because I wanted to try their orange marmalade. Lastly, for my drink I had some green tea!

Day #7 – Lunch

For lunch today we were at Volvo and they provided it for us. For their vegan option they had white rice topped with aloo gobi, which is a curry-type of food, fermented cabbage, a vegan mint yogurt on top, and a side of polenta.

Day #7 – Dinner

For dinner we went to the cooking class and when we first got there they had already prepared these for us. They consist of an oat yogurt on the bottom with roasted sunflower seeds, a slice of carrot, and some spices on top.
This was our first course and it consisted of boiled potatoes, onion rings, berries, shallots, seeded crackers, and dill. Then next to it was steamed cauliflower with a vegan cheese-type sauce on top of it. Lastly, there was a potato foam as well.
For the second course we had an oat milk yogurt on the bottom with the second layer being cooked beets that were topped with quinoa, pistachios, berries, and an apple fruit leather.
For our main course we had Swedish smoked tofu with kale chips, a berry sauce, mashed potatoes, shallots, and fermented cabbage.
For our final course we had a chocolate ganache on the bottom topped with vegan snickerdoodle cookies, rice crisps, powdered sugar, and raspberries with a side of sorbet.

Day #8 – Breakfast

Day #8 – Lunch

Day #8 – Dinner

For breakfast this morning I had sourdough toast with vegan butter and a side of vegan salami, vegan cheese, and red peppers with some apple juice for my drink.
For lunch today we went to ABB and they did not have many vegan options so the chef said he would make us something! He made us falafel with a spiced rice, zucchini, roasted red pepper, and a spicy red sauce with a side of peanuts and a decorative piece that included honey dew, tomatoes, and a red pepper.
For dinner tonight we went to a Chinese restaurant and they made us a vegetable stir fry with tofu and rice!

Day #9 – Breakfast

Day #9 – Lunch

Day #9 – Dinner

For breakfast this morning I had sourdough with vegan butter and a side of vegan salami, vegan gouda, and red peppers. They also had soy yogurt this morning so I had strawberry soy yogurt with corn flakes, coconut, and banana chips with orange juice to drink.
For lunch today we were at Valea and I had soy curls, couscous, salad, fries, and herbed potatoes; delicious!
Today we went to O’Leary’s again and I got the vegan quesadillas as an appetizer and the falafel burger for my main. Let me just tell you, their vegan quesadillas are out of this world!!!!! They are even very much so approved by a crazy meat-eater!

Day #10 – Breakfast

Day #10 – Lunch

This morning a group of us went to Tin Tin’s that is near the hostel and I got oatmeal with cinnamon, maple syrup, and raspberries with orange juice and a vanilla soy latte to drink! And since they did not have they great of a vegan option, the waitress gave me a free chocolate coconut ball that was delicious!
For lunch we went to John Scott’s and I got the vegan falafel burger with a side of sweet potato fries.

Day #10 – Dinner

Today was a group dinner and we tried out a Himalayan restaurant! This was our appetizer that was called Hariyali Pakora, which is deep-fried vegetables with chickpea flour and the house chutney.
This is what they serve with the main meal. It is just white rice, grilled green beans and mushrooms, and the house chutney sauce.
My friend and I got two of the vegan options and just ended up splitting them! We did get a picture of this one but unfortunately not the other one. This was the Say Himali, which is mustard leaves, spinach, red onion, and potato stew with the chutney. The dish we did not get a picture of was the Kauli Kurilo Aloo, which is cauliflower and asparagus made with the chutney sauce.

Day #11 – Lunch

Day #11 – Dinner

I am a very satisfied vegan to say the least! I never really liked McDonald’s but since I cannot have it anymore in the states, I do miss it! In the states the fries are not even vegan so I was very happy that I could get them here. I ended up getting the McVegan, which was a veggie burger, vegan mayo, lettuce, tomato, mustard, and ketchup, and my side of fries!
Tonight we had what our professor calls the Iron Chef Dinner and that is where we order in pizza and we break up into teams to make appetizers and desserts. Our group ended up making an animal-based spinach and artichoke dip and a plant-based spinach and artichoke dip. It was so good and I actually have never made a vegan spinach and artichoke dip, but I will definitely be making this again!
For dinner everyone ordered from a pizza place that surprisingly did not have any vegan options, so instead we went back to the cute café and ordered their two vegan pizzas. The pizza on the left was kebabs, mozzarella, tomato, and radish, and the left pizza was chorizo, mozzarella, paprika, and bacon; ALL VEGAN!!!!!!!

Day #12 – Lunch

Day #12 – Dinner

Today we had lunch at BraunAbility and they had a tasty vegan option! There was just a normal salad with a thousand island type of vegan dressing and then they had a vegan quiche that had zucchini, artichokes, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
Tonight we found a cute little place called Brewer’s Beer Bar and there they had a large amount of vegan options; I would say about half of the menu was! My friend and I got two different vegan pizzas to split and this one was the Vegan Sunshine, which was pineapple, grilled-marinated seitan, vegan cheese, tomato sauce, paprika, olives, chives, and green peppers!
The other pizza we got to share was the Love Nut, which was vegan cheese, tomato sauce, fresh avocado, roasted cauliflower, rocket salad, almonds, and lemon and hazelnut dressing! Both were so delicious; only one more night left!

Day #13 – Breakfast

Day #13 – Lunch

Day #13 – Dinner

This morning my friend and I went to the little café down the street from the hostel to get breakfast. I got the tofu salad on a toasted baguette and a mango, pineapple, and passion fruit smoothie. The tofu salad could be compared to a chicken salad and it was incredible; perfect way to end the trip!
Once we saw that all of their desserts were vegan, we of course needed to order one and he said the apple pit was very popular so we gave that a try. He was not wrong! It was warmed and then had vegan vanilla ice cream on top!
We were not ready to leave McDonald’s in Sweden quite yet, so of course we had to make a stop again! I got the same thing again, the McVegan, because it was so delicious the first time!
For dinner we went to Heaven 23, which is the nicest place that is in Gothenburg. The food was gourmet so a bit different, but not terrible. It was mainly mushrooms so I was not a big fan of this but it was still an amazing night!
