Day #3 – Bus Tour and Shopping

Today we had a bit of a late starting day in the hopes to overcome our jetlag, which thankfully I did and I am ready for some exploring. This morning we went on a bus tour around Gothenburg showing us some of its unique history. Here is a picture of us outside of our hostel before we left for our tour.
Here is a picture outside of the Fish Church, or Feskekôrka in Swedish, which was not my favorite place because of the intense fish smell, but it was pretty on the outside. After this, then we headed to Avenyn, which takes me to my next picture.
Here is a picture of Avenyn, a major shopping street here in Gothenburg. Avenyn reaches from this end, Götaplatsen, to the bridge Kungsportsbron.
On our bus tour we also stopped at the German Church, which was opened in1748. It was named after Queen Christina of Sweden and is used by the German and Dutch congregation in Gothenburg.
Here are a few pictures from my favorite part of the day where we got a perfect lookout of Gothenburg. A fun fact today was learning how many people live in Sweden as a whole but also Gothenburg alone. In Gothenburg there are half a million people, in Stockholm there are 1.5 million, and in Sweden all together there are 10 million people.
After our bus tour we stopped at our professors favorite place to get cinnamon rolls. They were thankfully vegan and also humungous. In Sweden they don’t believe in putting icing on their cinnamon rolls, so instead they sprinkle sugar on the top. One thing I love about Sweden in that they do not like additives and fake ingredients, so everything is pure and fresh. Another interesting fact about Swedes is that their tv channels are all American and they listen to mainly American music as well. Something we have also learned here is that they are currently moving to a cashless society, so not very many places accept cash anymore and only card.
I have only been here for a little over a day and I can’t even count how many dogs I have seen, and everyone here lets you pet their dogs!

Daily Reflections:

– Sweden is the second largest country for coffee consumption, with Finland coming in first

– Sweden is the largest country for candy consumption

– Swedes love to dress their dogs in rain coats and booties
